Tengku Zafrul’s Shock Resignation Rocks Umno – Set to Join PKR?

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — In a stunning political twist, Umno may be on the verge of losing one of its prominent leaders, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, as speculation mounts over his potential defection to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed tonight that the party has not yet officially received Zafrul’s resignation letter, but acknowledged the Kota Raja Umno Division chief’s clear intention to quit and cross over to PKR.

“This matter is being taken seriously,” said Asyraf, warning that it is “highly inappropriate” for any component party in the Unity Government to “indiscriminately accept” members from other parties.

He emphasized that such moves could destabilize the delicate balance within the Unity Government, sparking “prejudice and suspicion” among grassroots members about the coalition’s solidarity and sincerity.

Tengku Zafrul, currently serving as a minister and seen as a key technocrat in the government, has not publicly commented on the alleged defection. If confirmed, this could mark a significant realignment in Malaysian politics, further testing the cohesion of the Unity Government.
