Voice of the Voiceless: Tan Lee Bee Honoured with AMN for 40 Years of Silent Service

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — Known to many as the expressive face in the corner of the TV screen, veteran sign-language interpreter Tan Lee Bee was honoured with the prestigious Bintang Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, recognising her decades-long contribution to the deaf community.

For over 40 years, Tan has been a vital bridge of communication, her hands and expressions conveying the news, court proceedings, and public messages to Malaysia’s hearing-impaired community. Often seen during national broadcasts, her tireless work earned her a place among 16 recipients of the AMN at the Istana Negara investiture ceremony, held in conjunction with the King’s official birthday.

“I feel happy, moved… like crying. This is a great recognition for the silent struggle of interpreters everywhere,” said the 64-year-old, adding that the honour symbolises the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in Malaysian society.

Tan’s journey began out of love — learning sign language to communicate with her deaf younger sister. Without any formal training, she embarked on a remarkable career path that included 17 years as a teacher for the deaf, and making history in 1994 as Malaysia’s first court sign-language interpreter.

Her television career began in 1985 with “Selamat Pagi Malaysia”, eventually making her a staple presence on RTM broadcasts and official government media, her expressive signing becoming a vital lifeline for deaf viewers across the country.

“Whatever we interpret, it has to be understood,” she once said. “When the deaf understand you and are happy, they will tell you. That’s what keeps me going.”

With no plans to stop, Tan says as long as her “hand is able” and her “mind is still okay,” she’ll keep signing — passionately, proudly, and powerfully.
