Parents Must Lead in Safeguarding Children’s Internet Use, Says Communications Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8, 2026 — Parents have been urged to take a more active and responsible role in supervising their children’s internet usage as online threats targeting young users continue to rise in Malaysia.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stressed that parental involvement is crucial in protecting children—particularly those under the age of 16—from cyber risks such as online scams, harmful content and excessive screen exposure. He made the remarks during the launch of Safer Internet Day 2026, organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“Smartphones, tablets and internet data plans are purchased by parents. Therefore, the responsibility and control must start with them,” Fahmi said, adding that digital devices should not be used as “babysitters” for children.

Sharing his personal experience, Fahmi said he actively monitors his 13-year-old child’s screen time after noticing excessive gaming habits. He explained that he has set clear boundaries, allowing only one hour of screen use unless permission is granted.

“This approach is not about being strict. It is about teaching moderation, discipline and helping children learn how to manage their time responsibly,” he said.

Fahmi also noted that the Safer Internet Day 2026 campaign places strong emphasis on the use of parental control tools, including screen-time limits and restrictions on video game usage. These measures aim to ensure that internet use does not interfere with children’s education, mental health or overall wellbeing.

As part of nationwide awareness efforts, approximately 150 community volunteers from various backgrounds have been appointed to disseminate information on internet safety. Their role includes educating the public on emerging cyber threats, online scams and safe digital practices.

The initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to promoting a safer and more responsible digital environment, particularly for children and young users in an increasingly connected society.
