PETALING JAYA: In a major political shake-up, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has stepped down as the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability after failing to defend his PKR vice-presidency in the party’s central leadership elections.
The two-term Setiawangsa MP also lost his position as the division chief in the recent PKR divisional polls.
Nik Nazmi was aligned with Rafizi Ramli in the party elections — a partnership that saw a double blow as Rafizi himself lost the deputy presidency to Nurul Izzah Anwar.
Rafizi, who is currently the Economy Minister, had earlier pledged to relinquish his Cabinet post if he failed to be re-elected as PKR’s No. 2, stating that it would be inappropriate for someone outside the party’s top leadership to remain in the government.
Nik Nazmi’s resignation is seen as a move in line with that principle.
