PETALING JAYA: A group of concerned parents is preparing to file for a judicial review to halt the development of a proposed 46-storey office tower — known as ParkCity Tower — adjacent to The International School @ ParkCity in Kuala Lumpur’s Desa ParkCity.
One parent, identified only as Lee, said repeated appeals to developer Perdana ParkCity to reconsider the project have been ignored.
“We intend to file for a judicial review and will seek an interim suspension of construction until the court delivers a decision,” she told FMT.
Lee alleged that the development was originally intended for a different location but was shifted to an empty plot next to the school. She said an announcement made during a quarterly parents’ meeting in January triggered widespread concern and frustration.
Although construction has yet to officially commence, a large crane was reportedly brought in on April 28 for preliminary groundwork near the school’s field — a move that alarmed both parents and students. While the crane has since been removed, videos circulating online showing it operating in close proximity to the school have only heightened parental anxiety.
The parents’ committee, which has been vocal in raising safety and environmental concerns, has since received a legal notice from the developer cautioning them against further public remarks regarding the project.
Another parent, Chia, 42, said she is considering withdrawing her child from the school if safety concerns are not addressed.
“It’s very worrying, especially seeing how close the crane was to the field where children run and play daily,” she said.
A Desa ParkCity resident and mother, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, echoed similar fears for her child’s wellbeing.
“The new primary school block was just completed last year, and now we’re being told a huge tower will be built right next to it,” she said. “This township is compact, and many students, including my son, cycle to school. Heavy construction vehicles on these roads are a serious risk.”
She also voiced concerns over the expected traffic congestion during construction, which she said could disrupt not only the school environment but also the hospital located directly across the road.
The group of parents is calling for a comprehensive impact assessment and transparency from the developer before proceeding with a project they fear could pose significant safety and community challenges.
