PETALING JAYA: While Covid-19 cases are surging in neighboring countries like Thailand and Singapore, Selangor is bucking the trend with a consistent decline in infections.
State executive councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin, who chairs the public health and environment committee, confirmed that Selangor has recorded fewer than 100 new cases per week since mid-March — a trend that has held steady into the second quarter of the year.
As of now, Selangor has reported a total of 3,807 cases for the year, a dramatic drop compared to 14,542 cases over the same period in 2023.
Jamaliah credited this progress to proactive state-led preventive measures and strong public compliance. However, she urged continued vigilance, especially among vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
Her comments came a day after Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said the federal government was closely monitoring developments in the region amid rising numbers elsewhere.
“While our numbers are encouraging, we must remain cautious and prepared,” Jamaliah said.
