Malaysia and Indonesia have reiterated the importance of a united and resilient ASEAN in navigating today’s pressing global issues, including those related to the economy, politics, and regional security.
This shared commitment was the highlight of a bilateral discussion between Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, held in Jakarta on Friday (June 27), during Anwar’s official one-day visit to the neighbouring republic.
In a Facebook post following the meeting, Anwar said both countries, as founding members of ASEAN, are steadfast in their dedication to strengthening the bloc’s unity and safeguarding its long-term stability.
“The deep-rooted partnership between Malaysia and Indonesia remains a vital pillar for ASEAN cohesion and serves as a model for regional cooperation that benefits the citizens of both nations and the wider Southeast Asian region,” he wrote.
Anwar also noted that both governments have expressed a strong willingness to resolve remaining border disputes swiftly, including maritime boundaries that have been under discussion for years.
According to him, prioritising a fair and amicable resolution to these territorial matters reflects the shared aspiration to foster deeper mutual trust and further enhance bilateral relations.
“A solution that serves both parties equitably will reinforce confidence and friendship between Malaysia and Indonesia,” Anwar added.
